Run Yank Run 053: Merry Christmas

Well hello and Merry Christmas from there United States!

Sorry I have been gone so long, those last few weeks in England were crazy busy and then once we all got back to the US it's been a period of adjustment. Good adjustment, but plenty of it.

ANYWAY, I'm back once again, this time with a new intro and outro for the podcast. I just signed up for the Atlanta Marathon coming in March, so I haver some training to do...

Run Yank Run 052: Red Tape

Hi folks. Back again. There's hasnt that much running lately. In fact, this episode was recorded on the second run in as many days and it's been almost two weeks since the last run.

Been extremely busy trying to work through the red tape of closing accounts and shutting things down here in the UK prior to our return to the US. Lots to do. Lots of paperwork, lots of calls.

Feels kinds like that movie Brazil:

Anyway, hope everyone is doing well. Will get one last episode from the UK out before we leave, promise!

Run Yank Run 051: Moving Back

Big announcement: we are moving back to the US. After three amazing years here in the UK, my job has ended and my visa will expire at the beginning of November, so we are packing it up all up and moving back. Probably not for good, we love it here in the UK and would like to stay here, but there simply hasn't been enough time to secure a new position that can sponsor a new visa in time.

I fully intend to continue this podcast and look forward to evolving it as things unfold.

Speaking of podcasts, be sure to head over to Krister's Running The Narrow Path podcast to check out his latest episode in which we run together in London for the Worldwide Festival of Races half marathon.

Krister and his family came to visit and we had a great weekend together exploring London.

So... that's the big news. It's been kinda crazy and there's so much to do in terms of packing, paperwork, etc, but I plan on getting at least one more episode out from England before we head back.

Thanks to everyone for your support and correspondence, it is always very much appreciated.

Run Yank Run 049: In Sweden

Welcome to my first ever multi-person episode of the podcast. Join me and Krister from the Running The Narrow Path podcast as we run through the Swedish forest and farm roads.

It was a fantastic trip and Krister and his family were wonderful hosts.

Krister going like the wind

Usually when podcasters try to record themselves and another person on a run, the other person is very quiet since the microphone is so far away. Well, I tried something different. I put a mic and the Nano on Krister and recorded myself in the usual way. I assumed that since both recording devices are digital, they would stay in sync once I linked them up in editing. No. They drift.

So every minute or so I needed to adjust a track by a couple of milliseconds to minimise phasing, etc. Lots of work but I think it paid off.

Also, the mic I gave Krister wasn't properly shielded from the wind.

But hey, lessons learned and I do think it was a good experiment. PLUS, nothing can take away from the fabulous trip and the great, peaceful runs Krister and I had.

Once again, we're coming up on the 50th episode of the Run Yank Run podcast, so, if you are a listener and would like to send in something to be included in a special 50th episode extravaganza, then send it to runyankrun@gmail.com

Send me an audio file (any format), something to read out, heck, even pictures I can post to the blog. Anything is welcome.

Run Yank Run 048: Rainy Run

Brrrr! It's rainy and cold... and it's AUGUST! Well, no matter, I head out for a 12 mile out-and-back heading west along the Thames. It was so wet that I was nervous about recording during the run, so I chat witcha during the rest stops.

I know I just put out ep 47 just a little while ago, but I've been enjoying running so much that I've been running pretty much every day and finally made the leap on two purchases and had to talk about 'em.

The first one is I decided to go ahead and get some new Nike Free's. But this time, I opted for the 3.0's which have almost half the sole of the 5.0's and it's a HUGE difference. I love them! Great ground feel and it's easier to keep up on the forefoot. I can tell my whole body is adjusting and can feel muscles in my legs, core, and even back are getting stronger. Good stuff.

The second is a 16GB silver iPad Nano. This thing is TINY. I can even clip it to the band on the back of my running cap and not even notice it. The biggest part of the decision was the fact that is records just like the iPhone. In fact, this episode was recorded on it. The picture below is a little bigger than actual size:

Lastly, we're coming up on the 50th episode of the Run Yank Run podcast! I can hardly believe it!

So, if you are a listener and would like to send in something to be included in a special 50th episode extravaganza, then send it to runyankrun@gmail.com

Run Yank Run 047: No Breath

Well it's Sunday long run time again, so I headed out the door on a rainy day to log some miles. BUT, my body had other plans. I only made five miles or so. I just didn't have any lung capacity. I got a case of the flu a week ago and I'm starting to think perhaps it was actually mild pneumonia. I feel better now but my heart rate was too high and I felt out of breath, so I cut the run short. Well, frequency over duration, right?

In this episode I talk about switching back to the Garmin, a new service I found that converts Garmin data into Nike+, and mention a site called Home Run London that organises group runs and will even handle baggage for you (I havent tried it yet but was tipped off by Claudia who left a comment on this blog).

I have a ticket to ride (again) to visit with Krister from the Running The Narrow Path podcast in Sweden at the end of the month and I'm really excited about that.

Oh, and for those of you wondering about the London riots, thankfully that has died down.

Run Yank Run 046: Weekend Runs

Hello folks, join me on a short 5K run on a sunny Sunday as I honour Nigel from the Running From The Reaper podcast for his Dailymile challenge of running 5K for 5 Years Of Podcasting.

This was a recovery run after Saturday's half marathon with @stevechopper from the A Mile With Me podcast and @clewsy from the Velo Club podcast. Steve had planned a Mojo Loco London but for various reasons it ended up just being us for an impromptu run along the Thames from Richmond to Hampton Court and back. It was a great run with great company and we got some good conversations (and some walking) into a long afternoon of running in the sun and clouds.

Run Yank Run 45: Race Day

Time once again for another istallment of Run Yank Run. Running been hit or miss due to work and life, but I was able to run the 2011 British 10K today and it was a lot of fun. Despite not receiving a pack pack, Tube closure, and general life wear and tear, I made it to start line and ran a good race. My goal was to finish in under an hour and whilst the offical chip timing isnt in yet, my Nike+ places me at just over 52 minutes. Happy with that.

Here's some pictures of the race and from ones I snapped:

Run Yank Run 044: I'm Baaack!

Once again, long time no see. A LOT has been going on since the last podcast episode and I try in my rambling way to recap in reverse chronological order all the drama and mundanity (is that a word?).

My father had a heart attack and then a double bypass and valve replacement, so I hopped on a plane to Michigan in the US to be there for that. He is now recovering and we are all thankful that he made it through the surgery and is on the way to health.

Another thing I do in the episode is review the Nike+ GPS Sportwatch that I have been using (when I have been running, that is). In short, it's a great option if you want a simple, elegant running watch and don't already have a Garmin. There, now you don't have to listen ;)
I have really been missing running and will be making a new concerted effort to weave it back into what has become a pretty hectic life, but without it what is there?

Run Yank Run 043: Go West

Hey folks, join me for another riverside weekend long run, one of two.

This time I decided to Go West Young Man, and venture out past Richmond to parts till now unrun and unexplored (well, at least by me).

Spring is definitely here and the leaves, flowers (and riverside flies) are going all out. Life is good, running is good, all is well. Well, except for my home internet connect saga, but I'll save that rant for the podcast...

Run Yank Run 042: Good Week

Hiya, I am writing this post by candlelight at a pub on the Chiswick High Street on a Sunday evening. My well-deserved pint is next to me and I am taking advantage of the free broadband (with purchase). Still no internet connection at the apartment (will take an additional 7-14 days!!!!) but hey, beggars can't be choosers, right?

It's been a good week for running. I logged 41 miles this week. My legs are feeling it now, but in a good way. Yesterday I went for a 15 mile run along the south bank of the Thames from Kew to Waterloo. Here's a map of the route:

It wasnt fast but I made to keep my average heartrate at 160. By the end my legs were pretty tired, proving I have a long way to go to get back to marathon fitness, but I didn't die and the next day (today) I went for a 6 mile recovery run during which I recorded this episode.

In short, life is good. The sun is shining, the trees and flowers are blooming, and Spring is finally here!

Run Yank Run 041: New Home!

This episode was recorded during a 10 mile Sunday long run.

Big News! I finally moved into a place of my own. It's a one bedroom flat on the Chiswick High Street and I couldn't be happier.

Work, life, and finding and moving into an apartment have eaten into running since the previous podcast, but now that things have settled I am looking forward to running more consistently.

In preparation (and wishful thinking) for warmer months ahead I invested in the Inov-8 H2Orizontal 2L Hydration bladder that is made to fit the Inov-8 Race Pro running rucksacks. This was my trial run with it and I love how the water bladder ride low in the small of my back. Felt very balanced and I forgot it was in there!

Run Yank Run 040: Happy Valentine

Happy Valentine's Day! Windy windy windy weekend. In this 40th episode I go for a Saturday run along the river in preparation for a Sunday long run.

I talk about being back in England after my trip to the States, how my running is progressing (first 30 mile weeks in ages!), searching for an apartment, and various bits n bobs and whatnot.

Run Yank Run 039: Home Again

Hello again friends. This podcast was recorded during my trip back to the US. The first week I was in New York City for work. It snowed like blazes. The second week I spent on vacation visiting family and friends in Atlanta. It was so good to be back on familiar ground with people who know me and I got a LOT out of being there and seeing everyone.

As far as running goes, it's been good. While in New York I ran a fantastic 10K loop of Central Park in the snow and a couple of interval sessions on the hotel treadmill. When I got to Atlanta - well actually Canton which is way north of Atlanta - I made a point of running about 5 miles per day in the hills. Fantastic!

In my last podcast I mentioned all the places I was going to eat and I am pleased to say I ate at them all. I am leaving the States a heavier, but very satisfied, person!

I just packed my running backpack for a morning commute run to the office in the morning. It will be good to be back in the swing of things, recharged, with a new sense of purpose and strength.

Run Yank Run 038: Park Life

Cough Cough, sniff sniff. I've been under the weather with a nasty sore throat and cold. This episode was recorded at Ravenscourt Park on a Saturday afternoon with the kids.

There hasn't been much running this week due to this bug, but I do discuss running in my new Evo II minimalist running shoes from Terra Plana, my blunder in not getting my race entry posted in time for the White Peak Half Marathon (bummer!), and running marathons and a potential half marathon in 2011.

Run Yank Run 037: Muddy Sunday

Happy 2011. This episode is pretty long at almost an hour, but when you run 10 miles on a Sunday and haven't put out an episode in a while I guess there's a lot to say.

In this one I talk about some running goals for 2011 including a full marathon and perhaps a 50 mile ultra, and the possibility of swimming the English Channel as part of a relay! That last one is unlikely, but hey, a guy can dream, right?

I also talk about the new Nike+ GPS watch and my new and as-yet untested Vivo Barefoot running shoes from Terra Plana.
I'll be testing these badboys tomorrow on a short commute run.

Lastly, I'm sorry to announce the end of an era - Nigel has decided to hang up his podcasting hat and retire the Running From The Reaper podcast - the one that inspired me to start this lil ole podcast. Nigel, you will be missed.
